Margaret Tobey, 100

Margaret Jane Tobey, age 100, of rural Three Rivers, died Wednesday Feb. 29, 2012 at the home of her son in Battle Creek. She was born in Chicago, IL on April 29, 1911 the daughter of Rudolph and Caroline (Kratky) Koenig. The family moved to Portage Lake when Margaret was very young where she attended Canada Corners Country School. She graduated from Mendon High School in 1928 and attended Western Normal College where she obtained her teaching certificate.

Margaret was a schoolteacher in numerous area country schools including, Culp, Catherman, Hopkins, Maple Grove, and Quailtrap. She received her B.A. Degree from W.M.U. in 1940 and taught in the Sturgis and Immaculate Conception school systems before retiring from Vicksburg schools in 1972. Margaret had served as a Regional Secretary in the Michigan Education Association, and was a member of the Michigan Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed time with her family, gardening, and winters in Florida following her retirement.

Margaret was married to Charles Herbert Tobey in Mendon on Aug. 24, 1946. They made their home on a farm north of Parkville until Herb’s death in 1998. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and by 2 sisters, Juliane Rumz and Rudolphina Koenig. Margaret is survived by a son, Charles R. (Cheryl) Tobey of Battle Creek; 2 grandchildren, Caroline (Joe) Koerner of Eagan, MN and Charles L. (Inna) Tobey of East Lansing; and by 2 great-grandchildren, Eric and Natalie Koerner.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon where the Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. on Sunday. The funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday March 5, 2012 at St. Edward Catholic Church in Mendon with Rev. Jim Vinh Le officiating. Burial will follow in St. Edward Catholic Cemetery.
