Out and About – Week of July 30th

This next weekend promises to be one filled with plenty of activities. If you plan carefully, you and your family will be able to get Out and About and take in most of them. So, put away the video games, hide the TV remote, get out the kitchen calendar and your family planner, and prepare to do things as a family.

Start out by taking in the 52nd Annual St. Joe Valley Old Engine Association Show this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, August 3, 4, and 5. The venue is still Boot Hill Ranch, located one and one-half miles east of Jones, on Bair Lake Street. DEADWOOD will be featured with their bluegrass music on Friday and Saturday. Other activities include garden tractor plowing, games for large and small tractors, threshing and bailing demonstrations, a sawmill operation, and, of course, a daily parade. If flea markets interest you, space is still available for $10 a day, or $25 for all three days. The price includes free primitive camping, with NO electricity. The grounds will be open Wednesday, August 1, for set up. To reserve space, contact Mary Shirk at (269) 278-4965. Show hours are 9 AM until 6 PM on Friday and Saturday. Hours on Sunday are from 9 AM to 2 PM. Donation is $4 per person, and the parking is FREE. There is no charge for anyone on Sunday, because activities are limited. For more information, contact Steve Ammer at (269) 651-8478 or Brenda Bickel at (269) 435-8288.

There’s a peaceful little place out on Shimmel Road, called Heartlight Center. Upon entering this little piece of heaven, your blood pressure returns to normal, and your anxiety seems to fade away. Everyone is invited to visit Heartlight Center this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, August 2, 3, and 4, for the Angels of Hope Sixth Annual Garage Sale, Silent Auction, and Bake Sale. Hours are from 8:30 A.M. until 4:30 P.M. All proceeds will allow Angels of Hope to produce coloring books, cards, and pictures to be made and sent to nursing homes, hospitals, rehab centers, orphanages, safe houses, and other facilities to share their message of love and hope. Heartlight Center is located at 67138 Shimmel Road, Sturgis, Michigan 49091. This is south of Featherstone, on the west side of Shimmel Road. If you’d like more information, please call (269) 651-2234.

Have plans for lunch this Friday, August 3? The Ninth Street United Methodist Church, 700 Ninth Street, Three Rivers, will host their Annual Pulled Pork Lunch from 11 A.M. until 3 P.M. The lunch includes a sandwich, chips, coleslaw, pickle, and a cookie for dessert. You can eat in, pick it up and take it home, or have it delivered. All of this costs just $6. Call the church office to place your order or get more information. The church’s number is (269) 273-2065.\

The Sons of the American Legion #170 and the American Legion Riders will host their 12th Annual Classic Car, Truck, and Motorcycle Show, this Saturday, August 4, from 9 A.M. to 4 P.M., at their post, located at the intersection of South Main Street and M-86, in Three Rivers. The Auxiliary will hold their Art and Craft Market. There will be trophies, food, and raffles, and DJ Rob will play the oldies but goodies from 11 to 4 P.M. There is a $10 entry fee per vehicle, and registration will start at 9 A.M.

Wrap up your weekend with a visit to Kline’s Resort this Sunday, August 5. The Allen Family will perform at 6 P.M. All you need to take with you are a few lawn chairs and some finger food to share after the concert. A Love Offering will be taken. Kline’s Resort is located five miles south of Vicksburg, off Silver Street.

Every time you read the paper or listen to the news these days, it seems all that you hear is how the economy has delivered a terrific blow to all of us. Everyone is looking for ways to save a buck or two. Try this. When you do something you might have paid for, such as vacuuming, mowing your lawn, or making your own cup of coffee, put that “cost” in a jar. The money adds up fast, and it’s better to have it in your pocket than someone else’s.

See you Out and About!
