Former Sturgis Citizen of the Year passes away

A former Sturgis Citizen of the Year and one-time city commission member has passed away.

Jo Ellen Oster, 64, passed Tuesday following a bout with cancer. The 1998 Sturgis Citizen of the Year, Oster served at different times as a city commissioner, member of the Downtown Development Authority and the Sturgis Chamber of Commerce.

Her late husband, John, is the namesake of the John E. Oster Award.

Established in 1981 by Jo Ellen Oster, it recognizes a Sturgis Public Schools teacher for teaching excellence and community involvement.

Jo Ellen Oster’s funeral will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis.
