Theft investigated in Sturgis Township

One suspect is in custody and another remains at large after they were found stealing diesel fuel from a farm over the weekend in Sturgis Township.

Deputies were on patrol during the early morning hours Sunday when they located the occupants of a red Dodge pickup stealing from fuel tanks at Black Gold Farms, located in the 69000 block of Klinger Lake Road.

As deputies attempted to make contact with the two subjects, the vehicle fled southbound onto Klinger Lake Road. After a short pursuit the driver crashed the vehicle into a swamp south of Fawn River Road.

As a result of the crash, the makeshift fuel drums in the rear of the pickup fell and spilled an unknown amount of diesel fuel. The driver fled the scene and the passenger was apprehended.

After further investigation, deputies found that the vehicle and its license plate had been stolen.

Deputies also recovered several firearms from the vehicle.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality was notified with reference to the spill.
