200 pounds of debris pulled from river

Organizers of Saturday’s river cleanup event estimated about 200 pounds of debris was pulled from two stretches of the Rocky River.
John Nelson, a member of the St. Joseph County Conservation District, said about three-quarters of the haul was found in the section between U.S. 131 and Liquid Therapy in downtown Three Rivers. A significantly less amount was gathered in the first stretch of the cleanup, which covered about 3 1/2 miles from Floating Bridge Road to Null Road in Flowerfield Township.
The conservation district is in its fifth of a six-year plan to clean all 150 miles of rivers in St. Joseph County.
A team of more than a dozen volunteers took part in Saturday’s cleanup.
The next cleanup event is June 20 on the Prairie River in Burr Oak Township. The 2 1/2-mile route will cover Middle Colon Road to McKale Road. The event begins at 9:30 a.m. and Nelson said volunteers are needed.
Canoes and kayaks are provided.
