Man arrested after shooting at Battle Creek police officer

A 21-year-old man who is accused of shooting at a Battle Creek police officer during a traffic stop has been arrested.

The Battle Creek Enquirer reports that the man could face assault with intent to murder charges.

He was found hiding Saturday night in the basement of a home that police had surrounded for several hours.

Major Jim Grafton says the man was stopped for speeding about 3:15 p.m. Saturday when a shot was fired at an officer.

The officer returned fire. Police chased the vehicle until the driver stopped and ran inside a house. He remained inside until officers and a police dog entered about 7 p.m. The dog bit the man on his arm.

Police later learned the man was driving on a suspended license.  (AP)
