Road Commission discusses security measures

Enhanced security measures will likely be employed when the St. Joseph County Road Commission consolidates operations to its Centreville location.
Members of the road commission board last week discussed the issue of security, stemming from an incident last month when an estimated two tons of road material was illegally taken from the Colon Township satellite barn.
With plans to close satellite locations in Fabius and Colon townships, and concentrate operations to its Centreville headquarters, the road commission will eventually have to consider fencing or some measure to prevent trespassing, board members concurred.
Board member Richard Anderson said some type of security should have been in place long ago, a recommendation reiterated by state police who investigated the incident. Anderson also made reference to Allegan County Road Commission and its security measures, which uses a card-swipe entrance into its material-holding facilities. Its business office also has shatterproof glass to minimize destruction as a result of potential workplace violence.
