Higgins announces candidacy for state representative

Mendon Township resident Carol Higgins has announced her candidacy for state representative for Michigan’s 59th District, which includes all of St. Joseph County and most of Cass County.
A Democrat, Higgins is challenging freshman incumbent Aaron Miller of Sherman Township. Miller is representing the Republican party.
Higgins, a retired teacher from Marcellus Community Schools, is chair of the St. Joseph County Conservation District Board of Directors.
As the first-born of eight and a mother herself at 17 years, Higgins said she has worked hard all her life.
Higgins said she is dismayed to see more families living in poverty, school-aid funding that has been robbed, college students with huge debt loads and senior citizens with new income taxes to pay.
Higgins said she believes in smart government that invests in citizens, public schools and protecting the environment.
The office will be decided Nov. 8.
