Man arrested after trying to steal car

A Sturgis man was arrested earlier this week after he attempted to steal a car from a residence in Fawn River Township.
State police said the incident took place at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the 29000 block of U.S. 12, where the 30-year-old suspect approached a homeowner and asked to borrow a screwdriver. Authorities said the man told the homeowner he was an employee at a nearby business and was in need of a tool.
The resident advised the man to leave. The suspect left but returned to the residence a short time later and was found inside a 2001 Chrysler Sebring parked at the rear of the property. Authorities said the man was attempting to start the car with a screwdriver.
The man was confronted by the resident and he fled on foot. He was taken into custody moments later at the Hillcrest Bar and Grill.
The suspect was charged with trespassing and attempted auto theft.
