Bob Potts, 68

Robert Edward “Poncho” Potts, age 68, of Sturgis, passed away early Thursday morning, March 30, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born Dec. 18, 1948, in Three Rivers, a son of the late Royal and Dorothy (Chrisman) Potts.
Bob resided most of his life in Sturgis and was a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1967, where he excelled in music. Bob was an accomplished tubist attending many camps and traveling abroad with Music Youth International. He not only could play the tuba, but nearly any instrument, including the piano. He continued his education at Western Michigan University, where he earned a bachelor and master degree in music.
He had been employed by Kirsch Company for many years until the closing of the company, at which time he accepted a position in the shipping department at American Axle in Three Rivers, where he retired following 11 years of dedicated employment. He was a member of Local Union 2093.
Bob had a true appreciation of music and played in area bands, including a Dixieland band in Grand Rapids. He enjoyed bowling and golf and had achieved a hole-in-one. He also loved his weekly poker party with his friends.
Bob is survived by a sister, Judi (Freeman) Hochstetler of Sturgis; a brother, Michael (Pam) Potts of Gobles; a sister-in-law, Janice Potts of Sturgis; nieces and nephews Eric (Kristen) Potts, Amy (her fiancé John Summey) Burr, Christopher (Cori) Schoenauer, John “Rocky” Schoenauer and Reka Marie Hochstetler; and several great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, David Potts; and two nephews, Richard “Rick” Potts and Shawn Potts.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A gathering of family and friends to honor and celebrate the life of Robert E. “Poncho” Potts will be held 1–4 p.m. Saturday, April 8. at Eagles Lodge #1314, 1207 West Chicago Road, Sturgis.
The Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements.
