Colon students selected for community service award

Students representing six Michigan high schools, including a team from Colon High School, have been selected as winners of the inaugural Community Service Awards.
Sponsored by the Michigan High School Athletic Association and Lake Trust Credit Union, the awards recognize students for their efforts to improve the lives of others in their communities.
The “Yard Squad” is comprised of sophomores Andrew Smolarz, Isaiah Fellers and Andy Stoll, and freshmen Phillip Alva and Austin Stoll. They are members of the track & field team and answered a request for students to help clean up an elderly person’s yard.
They have since cleaned three yards during weekends while still playing multiple sports during the spring.
Superintendent Christine Barnes said more calls for help are coming in as the Squad’s reputation grows.
In addition to a $1,000 award, the “Yard Squad” will receive an additional $500 to be donated to a non-profit, 501 (c)(3) organization of its choice, thanks to a contribution from the Lake Trust Foundation.
