Resident concerns over road reconstruction

Concerns have been expressed by some Sherman Township residents regarding a plan to reconstruct Wait Road.

Slated to take place next year, the project will extend from North Centerville Road at the Sturgis city limits north to Wait Road. The reconstruction would continue east to the M-66 intersection for seven-tenths of a mile.

The plan calls for widening Wait Road from 22-feet wide to 36-feet wide, adding space for wider shoulders.

Funding comes from a $252,000 state grant, which will be matched by $63,000 in local money.

Andy Wenzel, who owns land on Wait Road, said he would prefer to not encourage more truck traffic on Wait Road, while other residents along the route in question concurred.

About 2,000 vehicles per day travel Wait Road, up to 10 percent of the traffic is semi tractor-trailers.
