Two police officers honored in House

State Rep. Aaron Miller last week honored two local men by formally recognizing them on the House floor.

Michigan State Police Detective-Sgt. Aaron Steensma and Trooper Daniel Thayer were formally presented with a special tribute highlighting their heroism and service in the line of duty.

On Jan. 24, 2018, state police personnel were executing a search warrant at a Cass County residence in rural Union Township related to a cold-case investigation. The suspect in the case leveled a long gun at the officers. They were attempting to take cover when Steensma was shot in the chest, and Thayer was shot in the chest and hand. Both men were wearing body armor and have recovered from the incident.

Miller said both men faced dangers most people cannot imagine, and it was his privilege to honor them for their service and commitment to keeping their community and state safe.
