Attendance count for fair

September 24, 2013 by Administrator · Comments Off

The official attendance count for the 2013 St. Joseph County Grange Fair was 140,547 patrons.

The numbers, released Monday by fair director Bill Johnson, were just a few hundred shy of the 2012 attendance figure.

Johnson said weather played a role in attendance not only at the grandstand and its nightly entertainment, but the fair overall.

He said Saturday’s ideal conditions drew a number of walk-up sales for the Josh Turner concert.

Fair is in the books

The 163rd St. Joseph County Grange Fair is in the books, and organizers of the annual event said they expect attendance to be slightly down from 2012.

Bill Younts, president of the fair board, said periods of rain during portions of three days of the seven-day fair may have kept prospective guests at bay. A shower Friday evening, he said, was especially detrimental to attendance.

The fair did end on a high note, however, as the busiest day of the fair was Saturday. The headline concert by Josh Turner and opening act Kix Brooks helped boost Saturday’s overall attendance.

Younts said the fair board meets Oct. 14 and its members will review the 2013 fair, and start looking toward its 2014 edition.

Harmony Fest successful

Organizers behind Sunday’s Three Rivers HarmonyFest said they couldn’t have been happier with the turnout for the 20th annual event.

Staged on North Main Street, the 10-band, day-long festival had the benefit of good weather and an event-ending fireworks display to lure more than 3,000 people throughout the course of the day and night. The fireworks show was supposed to take place during the June 15 finale of the Three Rivers Water Festival.

Karen Hay, chair of the HarmonyFest committee, said work on lining up acts for 2014 will begin later in the year.

Hay offered a special thank you to the companies and individuals whose financial help and services in kind made the 2013 HarmonyFest possible.
