Hundreds of people gathered Sunday evening at Constantine High School to salute the district’s 2012 football team.

Despite falling short in their bid for the Division 6 state title Friday, the Falcons received a hero’s welcome at the community gathering. Coach Shawn Griffith and school personnel thanked the fans for their support and the team for its effort.

Friday’s 37-27 setback to Ithaca at Ford Field makes Constantine the Division 6 runner-up for the second consecutive year. The Falcons finished the 2012 campaign with an 11-3 record, while Ithaca completed its third consecutive undefeated season.

Here’s an announcement from Constantine Schools athletic director Mike Messner regarding Friday’s Division 6 state championship game between Constantine and Ithaca.

The school district will get to keep 50 cents of every $10 ticket for the game purchased at the high school office. Messner said he hopes fans planning to attend the game buy their tickets ahead of time to help the school offset the expense of sending its team and band to Ford Field.

In addition, Messner said a 7 o’clock meeting tonight at the high school will provide an opportunity to sign up for a free spectator bus and buy game tickets. Tickets will also be available at the high school until 3 p.m. today and 7:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday.

Constantine High School’s varsity football team is returning to Ford Field for the second consecutive year in search of a Division 6 state title.

The Falcons ran the table Saturday, topping Monroe St. Mary’s Catholic Central, 36-14, at Harper Creek High School. The 11-2 Falcons never trailed and relied on 245 rushing yards from sophomore Justin Hull to hold off St. Mary’s, which ends its season with a 10-3 mark.

Saturday’s contest marked the third time in four years the two teams have met in the state playoffs.

Constantine will play Ithaca at 4:30 p.m. Friday for a rematch of last year’s Division 6 championship game. The Yellowjackets are the two-time defending state champ and have won 41 consecutive games.
