The Environmental Protection Agency says it believes more than a million gallons of oil may have leaked this week into a major southern Michigan waterway that leads to Lake Michigan. The estimate reported Wednesday night from the EPA exceeds earlier estimates from the company responsible for the spill into Talmadge Creek, which runs into the Kalamazoo River. Those estimates totaled about 819,000 gallons. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson says in a statement the agency and Enbridge Inc. are taking action on the “serious spill.” The EPA says it’s requested the Coast Guard make $2 million available to fund the federal government’s operations in response to the spill. And the EPA will move additional vessels into the area within days to assist in the response. (AP)

Jennifer Granholm’s remarks Wednesday evening in a teleconference came as a state police official who conducted a flyover of the site said the oil had spread past a key point in the river upstream of Kalamazoo. Tom Sands is deputy state director for emergency management and homeland security. He says he saw oil across Morrow Lake and a light sheen past a dam a few miles downstream from Battle Creek. Earlier, Alberta-based Enbridge Inc. said it was doubling the number of workers sent to help contain and clean the spill. (AP)

Representing the co-founders of Lake Templene will be Floyd and Marie Templin. The husband and wife are the only surviving founders of the 1,050-acre lake, which was created in the 1960s.

The brief program will take place at the Lake Templene Dam and spillway, near Findley Road. The location marks the site where Founder’s Landing, a boat launch to be constructed within a few years, will be developed exclusively for Lake Templene residents. Founder’s Landing is to recognize the Templene and others whose efforts led to the creation of the lake.

Founder’s Landing is not the same public access proposed by Nottawa Township for the Prairie River.

The lone agenda item indicates a “resolution to borrow” will be contemplated by the district’s seven-member board of education. The unidentified expense ties in to an energy-conservation project approved by the board earlier this month. The project is part of a Performance Agreement for Comfort, which provides services designed to reduce energy use and operational costs.

The energy-efficiency measures are expected to save the district about $200,000 annually, district officials said.

Southern Michigan is learning that devastating oil spills aren’t limited to the Gulf Coast. Crews were working Wednesday to clean up an estimated 877,000 gallons of oil that coated birds and fish as it poured from a pipeline leak into the Kalamazoo River. Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm toured the area by helicopter Tuesday night and said more resources are needed. The river eventually flows into Lake Michigan, but officials don’t believe oil will seep that far. Calgary, Alberta-based Enbridge Inc.’s affiliate Enbridge Energy Partners LP of Houston owns the pipeline. Its chief executive says “we’re going to clean it up.” The pipeline carries about 8 million gallons of oil daily from Griffith, Ind., to Sarnia, Ontario. (AP)

Cellular coverage in a pocket of U.S. 131 between Constantine and White Pigeon could be back to normal within a month.

The second of two communications towers is expected to be fully installed by the end of the week in an area north of Dickinson Road in Constantine Township.

Dave Ritzer, who owns the towers and property on which they are being placed, said the original 340-tall towers were knocked down during an F2 tornado that struck the area on June 6. Cell coverage in the absence of the towers has been lacking, Ritzer said, adding that the two towers carried communication equipment for all the major cell carriers.

He said under normal circumstances, replacing fallen towers would take about eight months. A work crew from Lowell-based J.T. Tower, however, was able to start working on installing the replacement towers a few weeks ago.

Once the new towers are up, it will be the responsibility of the cell carriers to provide the appropriate equipment for J.T. Tower crews to install. Though the previous towers were insured, their loss was valued at more than $1 million, Ritzer said.
