A friend of mine submits a Letter to the Editor at least once a month. He isn’t upset about anything in particular and rarely complains. He is, however, a very committed and dedicated person to at least two things. One of these is the Lions Club and the other is the donation of blood. He submits his Letter to the Editor to remind everyone about the importance of donating blood. I think of him, at this time, as I remind you that tomorrow, August 27, there will be a blood drive at the JoCo Center in Three Rivers from 11:30 A.M. to 5:15 P.M. The JoCo Center is located on Wood Street, next to Kadant-Johnson. I’m sure my friend will be there, by George, and if you want to feel better about yourself, you should join him and give up a pint of that precious red stuff. Oh yes, this is just another one of those things that is absolutely FREE. In fact, they’ll probably give you a free cup of juice for all your trouble. Read more

Summertime and festivals go hand-in-hand here in St. Joe County. We start out with Water Festival here in Three Rivers, Covered Bridge Days in Centreville, Riverfest in Mendon and we sort of wrap up summer with HarmonyFest back here in Three Rivers. It’s sort of the “Last Hurrah” before school starts and, for those of you who remember, the last weekend folks should wear their white shoes. There’s nothing you can do about the arrival of Labor Day except to enjoy the ride and fire up the grill one more time. Read more
Out and About for August 12th, 2008

Where has the summer gone? It’s almost the middle of August, and next month at this time, the kids will have been back in school for a little over a week. In three months, we’ll be finishing our Christmas shopping. Before you fall into deep depression, remember that we still have some great events to anticipate: the St. Joe County Grange Fair and the Fall Color Tour, to name just a couple. Fall is a great time to live in Michigan. The colors are fantastic, and it’s remarkable how Mother Nature prepares us for the unpredictable winter months. To quote my favorite sister, “I just love the change of seasons.” Read more
