Fishing tournament will help United Way

June 29, 2009 by WLKM · Leave a Comment

The St. Joseph County United Way reports an opportunity to help the local charity by purchasing a raffle ticket for a chance to fish with one of two professional celebrity fishermen.

Burr Oak Tool, Inc. is hosting the 1st Annual St. Joseph County United Way Bass Fishing Tournament at Lake Templene with proceeds benefiting the local United Way organization.    The event will take place on Saturday, July 11th, from 6 a.m. until noon with weigh-in at 12:00 noon sharp!

Raffle tickets (raffle license #X72618) are available for a chance to fish with four-time B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year and Professional Bass Angler, Kevin VanDam, or ESPN’s Mark Zona.  For just $10 per ticket, you could spend your morning in the same boat with one of these two all time great sportsmen.  The drawing will be held on Friday night, July 3rd, at Ribs on the Runway in Sturgis.

Kelly Hostetler, executive director of the United Way, said, “This is the first time for this event for us and we are so thankful for the work that our volunteers are putting into it.  David Greene and John McKenzie from Burr Oak Tool have worked very hard on this tremendous event.”

Greene, a full time employee at Burr Oak Tool, Inc., said, “I wanted to help the United Way and since I help organize the company’s fishing tournament every year, we put the two efforts together and thought this should be a countywide event.”

Hostetler said, “Kevin VanDam is a two-time winner of the Bassmaster Classic Championship.  Also, Karin Zona, Mark’s wife, has been a great support and has been helping to organize the tournament.  We are very appreciative of her work.  This is going to be such an exciting event!”

Karin Zona adds, “Even if you don’t sign up for the tournament, you can buy a ticket to fish with Kevin or Mark.  Then if you win, you can sign up!  But, please buy a ticket and support the United Way for this charter event.”

Entry for the fishing tournament is $25 per person, or $50 per boat.  Refreshments will be available.

Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be awarded, and a prize for the biggest bass.

Many companies have donated door prizes for the event, as well as autographed items from our celebrity fishermen.

Task Force on Jobs meets Thursday

June 29, 2009 by WLKM · Leave a Comment

State Reps. John Proos and Jase Bolger have announced the agenda for the Strategic Task Force on Jobs that will be held on Thursday (July 2nd) in Southwest Michigan.

“As we work to create a better environment for businesses and industry to create jobs for Michigan families, we are looking for proactive solutions to move Michigan forward,” said Proos, chair of the task force. “Southwest Michigan is a state leader in economic development, and we are looking for ideas from all over the state to use as a model to help implement long-term and strategic policy solutions that best utilize Michigan’s talented work force.”

Proos said the panel is sponsoring hearings all across the state to talk to business owners, employees, experts and officials on how to create and improve Michigan’s job climate. Specifically, the task force will explore biosciences, agriculture and tourism in Southwest Michigan. Bolger said task force members will focus on some of Southwest Michigan’s greatest assets, and will hear from the true experts who see opportunities for change every day.

“There are some pretty extreme barriers to job growth in our economy,” said Bolger, R-Marshall. “The goal of this panel is to listen to new and innovative ideas for removing these barriers and creating jobs, and we are looking all over the state for ideas that will put Michigan on track for a bright and prosperous future.”

The lawmakers will spend the day touring area businesses and meeting with local business leaders. The formal hearing will begin at 2:45 p.m. at the MSU Extension Center, located at 1791 Hillandale Road in Benton Harbor. The task force will take testimony from George Zimmerman of Travel Michigan, Millicent Huminsky of Southwestern Michigan Tourism Council, Ed Kretchman of Berrien County Farm Bureau and Dr. Tom Zabadal, station coordinator of the Southwest Michigan Research & Extension Center.

“With agriculture as the second leading industry in Michigan and the tourism sector continuing to grow, Southwest Michigan has the potential to lead in future job growth,” Proos said.

Joining Proos and Bolger on the task force are state Reps. Kim Meltzer, Bill Rogers and Wayne Schmidt.

Thursday’s task force hearing is the second statewide location the committee has traveled to. The first event, held in Lansing, heard an overview of Michigan’s job climate, from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation; Michigan Chamber of Commerce; the Grand Rapids Chamber; Mackinac Center; Automation Alley and Charles Ballard, economics professor at Michigan State University. Future meeting dates include a July 27 hearing in northern Michigan and an August 24 hearing in southeast Michigan.

MDOT will remove some lane restrictions

June 29, 2009 by WLKM · Leave a Comment

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is removing over 65 percent of lane restrictions on state routes to accommodate Fourth of July holiday traffic.

Beginning at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 2, and continuing until 6 a.m. Monday, July 6, 111 out of 164 projects statewide will be free of lane restrictions.

“We urge all motorists to drive with caution through work zones during this busy summer holiday weekend,” said MDOT Director Kirk Steudle. “Temporarily suspending many of our projects will make travel more convenient over the long Fourth of July holiday when an estimated 1.1 million motorists will be on the road.”

To help make this holiday weekend a safe and enjoyable one, motorists are advised to obey the posted speed limits, drive with caution, and pay close attention to road signs and orange barrels as they navigate construction zones.

Since 2006, highway construction zone speed-limit signs with “Where Workers Present 45″ have required motorists to reduce their speed to 45 mph where workers are present. Motorists can maintain the posted speed limit, except when in the vicinity of workers. This change helped reduce the number of work zone crashes, injuries and fatalities last year, while improving traffic flow in those areas.

As always, before planning your route, MDOT advises motorists to check the MI Drive Web site at www.michigan.gov/drive. Click the “MDOT Halts Most Work for Holiday” notice for holiday travel information.

The City of Sturgis reports that construction on the city-wide Westside Sewer Interceptor project – also known as SRF 2008 – is progressing.

According to The Sturgis eWire, crews are currently installing sewer on North Centerville Road, which is closed to thru traffic between Progress and Lafayette streets for the foreseeable future.

Crews are also at work reconstructing Broadus and Progress streets.  They expect to have both reconstructed as gravel roads in the next few weeks.

With construction underway, residents are reminded to obey all construction signage when in the area and to travel slowly and with caution should they need to travel in the construction zone.  Watch for other vehicles and construction equipment.
