Flu season: How many shots?

August 31, 2009 by WLKM · Leave a Comment

Doctors don’t know yet if it will take one dose or two of vaccine to protect against the new swine flu. Add that to vaccine for the regular winter flu, and it could be a multishot season for a lot of people – or a multisquirt season, for those who choose the FluMist nasal-spray version.

Some possibilities:

-One shot: Older adults currently aren’t on the priority list to get swine flu vaccine but they should get the seasonal vaccine, which is available.

-Two shots: There’s a potential for the regular vaccine in one arm and the swine flu vaccine in the other, if that one requires just one dose.

-Three shots: The swine flu vaccine might require two doses three weeks apart, plus the regular vaccine.

-Four shots: There’s even this possibility for some children. Youngsters under 9 who are getting their first-ever regular flu vaccination need two doses of it.  (AP)

St. Joe County unemployment is 16%

August 31, 2009 by WLKM · 1 Comment

July’s jobless rates were stable in Southwest Michigan.

According to the latest labor market analysis for Southwest Michigan from the Michigan Department of Labor, Energy and Economic Growth (DELEG), both the labor force (people who are employed plus those looking for a job) and employment declined at the same pace, leaving unemployment rates stable.

Usually in July, layoffs of temporary workers continue in the public education sector and auto-related manufacturers temporarily shut down their operations to retool the factories for next year’s models. This year, however, layoffs in the auto sector occurred in earlier months due to financial difficulties and restructuring in the industry. As a consequence, the July temporary layoffs in the auto industry were not as pronounced as usual, leaving unemployment rates virtually flat from June levels.

The unemployment rate in Branch County in July was 15.5 percent, down from 15.8 percent in June, but considerably higher than the 9.9 percent recorded in July 2008.

In Cass County, the jobless rate in July was 11.1 percent, down from 11.4 percent in June, but significantly above the 7.1 percent registered in July 2008.

St. Joseph County’s unemployment rate in July of this year was 16 percent, an improvement from 16.5 percent in June, but up considerably from July 2008 when the figure was 12.1 percent.

Unemployment rates continued to set new high records in July over the past two decades in all regional counties. Jobless rates jumped over the year at an average of 5.2 percentage points. Hillsdale County recorded the highest jobless rate increase over the year (+6.9 percentage points), followed by Lenawee (+6.6) and Jackson (+6.3).

Michigan’s jobless rate in July was 15.6 percent, up from 15.4 percent in June, and substantially higher than July of last year when it stood at 9.1 percent.

The national jobless rate in July was 9.7 percent, unchanged from June, but up from July of 2008 when it was 6 percent.
