Out and About – Week of April 12th

This month marks the start of my fifth year of putting together the” Out and About” column. It’s been a fun four years so far, and I look forward to many more years of sharing my thoughts and ideas with you. This has not been a solo mission. Without my wife’s editing expertise, all doubt as to my sanity would be removed. I can’t think of anyone more qualified to insert the commas and other punctuation or wording, thus making the column readable. Once again, I also thank Elena, the newspaper’s Managing Editor, for keeping me in line and informed as to what is publishable and correct. Most of all, I want to thank you readers for your kind words and input. You are what this column is all about. Keep on reading the column, and I’ll continue to try to keep you informed and entertained.

Three Rivers Community Schools and the Carnegie Center for the Arts are teaming up to produce the 25th Anniversary of” A Celebration of the Visual Arts”. The opening awards reception for this annual showcase happens Sunday, April 25 from 2 until 4 P.M. at the Carnegie Center for the Arts, 107 North Main Street, in historic downtown Three Rivers. Students in grades kindergarten through 12 will be showcased and everyone is invited to witness their creative talents on display. The high school awards presentation will take place at 3. This exhibit will remain open until May 25, so you have time left to check it out at the Carnegie. Carnegie hours of operation are Tuesday through Friday 10 A.M. until 5; Saturday 10 until 3 P.M., and they are closed Sunday and Monday.

I’ve mentioned this before, but it bears repeating. Gilmore Young Artist Charlie Albright will adorn the Riviera Theatre stage Tuesday evening, April 27 at 7:30. The Carnegie Center for the Arts will host a pre-glow party at the Carnegie from 6 until 7 P.M., with a variety of drinks and things to nibble.

Because this is a team effort, tickets are now on sale at the Riviera Theatre and Carnegie Center for the Arts. Ticket prices are Adults $12; Senior Citizens $10; and Students $5. This concert is open seating.

The younger generation might want to set aside Saturday, April 24. The time you want to remember is 2 P.M. and the event is a concert by the Kalamazoo Symphony Burdick-Thorne String Quartet entitled “The Maestro Plays by Bill Martin, Jr.”. The venue for this entertaining concert is the Three Rivers Public Library, located at 103 South Douglas in Three Rivers. This is another one of those events you’ll want to mark as FREE.

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, June 25 and 26. The relay runs from noon on Friday until noon on Saturday. Prior to the relay, you’ll want to attend some of the fundraisers and do your part to work toward a cure for cancer. The theme for this year’s relay is “Cowboy Kickin for a Cure”. One of the fundraisers, “Bark for Life”, is a canine event to fight cancer. “Bark for Life” takes place Saturday, May 8, at Meyer Broadway Park, just west of Three Rivers at the intersection of Broadway Road and Roberts Road. Registration begins at 9:30 A.M. and the opening ceremonies start at 10 A.M. This will be followed by the walk around the track until noon. Registration is $10 for each dog, with a two-dog limit per owner. All dogs must be on a leash, and owners must be prepared to clean up after their four-legged friends. Prizes will be awarded, and there will be entertainment and vendors on site. For more information, please contact Sally Cotton at (269)279-3550 or e-mail her at scotton@smb-t.com. One of the many reasons for “Bark for Life” is that pets will not be permitted at the June Relay for Life at Armstrong Field in Three Rivers.

If you have a few minutes to spare this week, please give this some thought: Why do “fat chance” and “slim chance” mean the same thing?

Have a great week and I’ll see you Out and About.
