Out and About – Week of February 21st

Those who enjoy doing things at the last minute should be interested in the 9th Annual Icebreaker Silent Auction and Fun Night this Saturday, February 26, at 7 P.M. at A Place in Time in downtown Three Rivers. The cost is $15 per person, with advance ticket purchase required. Ticket price includes food and beverages. Contact the Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce at (269)278-8193 for tickets or e-mail Deb at the Chamber office at www.debherring@trchamber.com.

The 55th Annual Water Festival is well into the planning stages and, from what I’ve heard, it will be another must-attend event, and one that will stay in your memory bank for a long time. The only thing that is really missing is you. If you have some ideas or suggestions, or if you can find some time out of your already busy schedule, your assistance would be greatly appreciated. There are many events that could definitely use a few extra volunteers. By volunteering, you wouldn’t be missing out on any of the fun. You’d actually be a part of the excitement of Water Festival. Your next step should be to contact Deb Herring at the Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce and say, “Here I am. What can I do to help?” Deb’s contact information is in the previous paragraph.

Growing up here in Three Rivers, I remember when you could do all of your shopping right downtown. Whether you were looking for ladies apparel, shoes, menswear, sporting goods, or a nice place to sit down and have a burger and milk shake, you had more than a couple of choices. Those days, I’m afraid, are gone forever. This is why it is heartwarming to see a new business opening in the historic downtown area of Three Rivers. A new boutique shop, The Pink Paisley Poppy Emporium, 6 North Main Street, will have a ribbon cutting this Friday, February 25 at 10 A.M. If you happen to be in the downtown area, stop by and welcome them to the community.

You’ll have to wait until May, but it will be then that 3 Rivers Gallery, LLC, will open their doors at the old Neff’s Flower Shop, 140 West Michigan Avenue. It is in a perfect location, adjacent to Scidmore Park and the seasonal Farmers’ Market. I can’t think of a better opportunity to spend time with family than to visit the Petting Zoo, relax in the park while the children make use of the playground, stop by the new gallery, and, before heading home, stop by the Farmers’ Market for some homegrown vegetables.

My thanks to the Commercial-News for updating the picture that accompanies this column. I’m about to start my sixth year doing Out and About, and I thought a more current likeness of me would be appropriate. If you’d like, you may cut it out and place it somewhere so as to scare the cat.

Everyone’s schedule seems to be getting more jammed every day. It’s imperative that we all keep at least one planner or event calendar. Here’s an event that isn’t happening until April, but you’ll want to enter it on your calendar now, especially if you’re looking for a job. The Glen Oaks Community College Job Fair will be Thursday, April 14 from 10 A.M. to 1 P.M. on the Glen Oaks College Concourse. This is a NO CHARGE event, so you’ll definitely want to make time to attend. Those seeking more information should contact Michelle McNamara at (269)294-4351. Glen Oaks Community College is located on Shimmel Road, just east of Centreville.

I am a strong advocate of volunteering, and I feel that I do my share and love every minute of it. As a matter of fact, my motto is “Volunteer….the world is run by those who show up.” There are volunteers for just about every organization whether it’s at the hospital, fire department, church, school, or service organization. The Commission on Aging (COA) is looking for volunteers at this time in several of their areas. They need help in a new PATH workshop, drivers to deliver magazines, a hair stylist, and someone to take client blood pressures. Interested volunteers should contact the COA at (269)279-8083.

Bird watchers, keep your eyes open for the first robin of spring. S/He has to be out there somewhere and will be a welcome sight.

See you Out and About!
