Out and About – Week of June 6th

Congratulations to the Three Rivers High School graduating class of 2011. You’ve had twelve years of free-to-you education. It is now up to you to make good use of your time and to do what you can to make this world a better place. If you’ve paid attention during the last twelve years, your future should be bright, as long as you continue to apply yourself in the right direction. Those who have slept in class or have been disruptive or just plain lazy should prepare for a very rude awakening. The world owes you nothing. Everyone has the opportunity to be whatever they want, but they must be willing to work for it.

Michigan Works will host a Resume Learning workshop this Wednesday, June 8, from 9 to 10:30 A.M. at their facility at 16587 Enterprise Drive, Three Rivers. Reservations are required. To reserve a place or obtain more information, please call (269)273-2717.

No, this is not a typo, but St. Joseph Valley Golf Club, located on M-86, between Centreville and Nottawa, will host Constantine’s 4th of July Golf Outing this Saturday, June 11, with a 1 P.M. tee off. Registration is $50 per person, which includes first- and second-place prizes, cart, lunch, and door prizes. Interested? Contact Mark at (269)435-2085 for more information.

If you’re a senior citizen and enjoy being part of a parade, then this just might interest you. The Commission on Aging (COA) will have one of their vans in several parades this season, and they are in need of riders for their van. Scheduled parades include: Three Rivers Water Festival parade, Thursday, June 16, starting at 7 P.M.; Centreville Covered Bridge Days, Saturday, June 25, starting at 3:30 P.M.; Sturgis, July 1, at 8:45 P.M.; Colon Fourth of July parade, starting at 11 A.M.; Constantine Fourth of July parade, also starting at 11 A.M.; White Pigeon Days parade, Friday, July 8, starting at 7 P.M.; and the Mendon Riverfest parade, Saturday, August 20, starting at noon. If any one of these parades interests you, please contact Mildred at the COA. The phone number is (269)279-8083 or 1-800-641-9899.

This is the time of the year when families usually take travel vacations. If you’re driving, you don’t need to worry about road conditions due to the weather, but you’re almost guaranteed to run into road conditions due to construction. Enjoy the time that you’re Out and About, but don’t forget a few helpful hints if you’re planning to be away from home for any extended time. Stop your newspaper delivery and have your mail held for you at the post office. Set some timers for your inside lights, so that it appears that someone is home in the evening. Mow your lawn just prior to leaving, and if you’re going to be gone for longer than a week, you might want to have a trusting neighbor cut your grass for you. I’m sure you’d be willing to return the favor someday. That neighbor should also have a copy of your itinerary, just in case you need to be notified about something important. A local family member should also know where you’re going and when you plan to return. If you know someone at the police department, you might ask them to drive by occasionally. Finally, it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to announce your plans on Facebook, or to mention to everyone you meet just how excited you are about being out of town for several weeks. Common sense is, in my mind, one of our most precious senses. It’s amazing how many people don’t use it as often as they should.

The Colon American Legion will offer an all-you-can-eat country breakfast next Sunday, June 12, from 8 A.M. till noon. The cost for adults is $5.50, and children four and under can eat for $2. Colon is not that far, and the reasonable prices and great food make the trip worthwhile.

I’ve already mentioned several times the fact that Water Festival happens next week. New this year is the Hometown Idol Singing Talent Showcase. This event happens Friday evening, June 17, with registration starting at 5:30, and at 7 P.M., it’s “Showtime”. The space is limited, so if you have any musical talent, you should register now at www.yourhometownidol.com.

There’s so much to see and do at this time of the year, and it’s all here in St. Joe County. All you need to do is get out of the house and take a look around.

See you Out and About!
