Headlee Rollback defeated
November 9, 2011 by WLKM
Constantine Public Schools will not be eligible to levy a full 18 mills to which it is entitled, as taxpayers in the county’s third-largest school district turned down a plan to override the so-called Headlee Rollback.
The district levies 16.7 mills and was hoping to amend the rollback in order to receive about $111,000 a year from non-homestead properties and businesses within the school district.
District residents in St. Joseph County were deadlocked on the matter during Tuesday’s vote, 207 to 207. Cass County’s residents in the district, however, added 140 “no” votes and only 70 “yes” votes to doom the measure.
