Siljander Sentenced

Mark Siljander, a former Three Rivers resident and one-time U.S. congressman whose jurisdiction included Southwest Michigan, was sentenced Wednesday to a year in prison for two offenses.

Siljander was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Mo., after he previously pled guilty to obstruction of justice and acting as an unregistered foreign agent. The former congressman, who now lives in Virginia, was accused of accepting stolen funds on behalf of a Missouri-based charity found to allegedly have ties with Middle East terrorism groups.

Prosecutors said Siljander was hired to lobby for the charity Islamic American Relief Agency, which was seeking to be removed from a government list of charities suspected of funding international terrorism.
