Improvements continue at Colon

Progress on a $15 million district-wide building upgrade project is being made in Colon Community Schools.

Superintendent Lloyd Kirby said a second group of students at Colon Elementary School returned to the building Tuesday after more than six weeks of instruction in portable trailers. The relocation was necessary while the third- and fourth-grade classrooms were being overhauled to include new carpet, windows, shades and cabinets.

The district’s first- and second-grade students held classes in the portables a month and a half prior to Christmas break before returning to their newly remodeled classrooms in early January.

The improvements are part of a $15 million, district-wide building-improvement project made possible following a September 2010 voter-approved millage request.

While all work at Leonidas School was completed in August, Colon Elementary and Colon Jr./Sr. High will be finished prior to the start of the 2012-13 academic year.
