Apple iPads For Students In Sturgis

Parents of students who will be attending Sturgis High School in the fall were updated last week on the district’s decision to issue an iPad to all students.

Led by Superintendent Tom Langdon, Thursday’s meeting with about 150 parents provided more details about the $600,000 purchase of 1,000 Apple iPad computer tablets. A portion of the district’s $250,000 annual textbook allocation will be used to help cover the cost. The balance will come from the general fund.

He said the district will be developing a homework-help web page and other applications that students will be able to use outside school hours. He said security programs will be installed to prevent misuse and the iPads have a tracking device to pinpoint their whereabouts if they are misplaced.

There will be no cost to students or parents, but parents will need to attend a mandatory meeting before their child is issued an iPad.
