Millage renewal to be on ballot

A millage renewal to support the St. Joseph County Commission on Aging is expected to appear on a countywide ballot later this year.

The amount of the renewal, however, is being debated by the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners. During Friday’s executive committee meeting, which drew all seven commissioners, discussion stemmed from the three-quarters of a mill expiring this year in support of the COA.

Commissioners have until May 15 to approve ballot language for the matter to appear before voters in August. The previous request covered a six-year period.

COA Director Lynn Coursey was asked about the agency’s short- and long-term needs.

It was decided last week that Coursey will meet with a subcommittee of county officials to help further determine the amount of the request in advance of the May 15 deadline.
