Police warning of scam

Michigan State Police at White Pigeon are warning residents to be aware of a driveway-paving scam that was unsuccessfully executed recently in White Pigeon Township.

Investigators said a group of workers claiming to have excess asphalt from another job use a high-pressure tactic in hopes of scamming thousands of dollars from unwitting victims. A phony estimate is presented to potential victims while workers begin their job without approval from the homeowner, investigators said.

The potential scam was carried out Friday last week at a residence on Huff Road. The suspects fled the scene after would-be victims called 911 to report the incident. The group was last seen driving a dump truck, a truck with a trailer containing a skid-steer, and a vehicle pulling a trailer with an asphalt compactor.

Police urge anyone who is targeted by the suspects to call 911.
