Out and About – Week of June 4th

By now, many students are out of school for the summer. Now there’s the problem of what to do to occupy their time for the next couple of months. The older students will look for work, so that they can earn some money for the fall. Elementary students will be bored after the first week and all we’ll hear is, “There’s nothing for me to do.” Please don’t let them spend all summer indoors playing video games. A great solution for those boring days of summer might be “Summer Fun in the Sun Day Camp”. This program begins next Monday, June 11, and runs through Thursday, August 2. The two elementary schools in Three Rivers will host this program. Andrews Elementary, 200 South Douglas Avenue and Hoppin Elementary, 415 North Main Street are the two venues. The Day Camps will run from 9 A.M. until noon. The fee is $2 per child. Registration and the one-time fee will be taken at the school of choice on the first day of attendance. The program is open to school age children 5 to 12. A daily lunch will be served, and crafts, sports, and games will be available.

The Riviera Theatre has many interesting events to choose from during the month of June. A Bag of Hammers is one of several movies to choose from. It will appear on the big screen June 13, 14, and 15 at 6 P.M., and June 20, 21, and 23 at 8:30 P.M. A movie that goes along with the car, truck, and motorcycle show, a part of the 56th Annual Three Rivers Water Festival, Smokey and The Bandit, will be shown Saturday, June 16, at 11 A.M. The admission for this movie is $2.

The Riviera is also proud to present two Italian operas, with English subtitles, during June. Peter Grimes appears on the big screen on Sunday, June 10, at 3 P.M., and again Tuesday, June 12, at 6 P.M. Anna Bolena, the other opera, will be shown Sunday, June 17, at 3 P.M. and once again on Tuesday, June 19, at 6 P.M. Admission to both of these operas is $16. For information on other upcoming events at the Riviera Theatre, visit their website at www.trriviera.com, or phone them at (269)278-8068.

The Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce would like all parade participants to know that their parade packets are available for pick up at the Chamber, 57 North Main Street, Three Rivers. They may be picked up through Thursday, June 7 at 4 P.M. The packets include the entry number and line-up instructions. The Water Festival parade is scheduled to step off Thursday, June 14, at 7 P.M. If we experience inclement weather, the parade will be held Friday, June 15.

The Three Rivers Public Library is hosting a Teen Creative Writing Workshop the first Wednesday of every month from 4 until 5:30 P.M. The library is located at 103 South Douglas Avenue in Three Rivers.

The Three Rivers Health Auxiliary volunteers will host a jewelry sale this Thursday and Friday, June 7 and 8. The sale takes place in the lobby of Three Rivers Health, South Health Parkway, Three Rivers. All proceeds will benefit Patient Services.

If religious music is calming to your soul, you’ll want to make plans to attend a performance by the Olivetians, a ministry of Olivet Nazarene University. They will perform next Sunday, June 10, at the Three Rivers Church of the Nazarene, at 10:40 A.M. The church is located at 1221 Coon Hollow Road in Three Rivers. This is at the intersection of Coon Hollow Road and US-131.

Finally, something extra for the chef of the family. Several common-sense ideas:

Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.

To make scrambled eggs or omelets rich, add a couple spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream and then beat them up.

Add garlic immediately to a recipe, if you want a light taste of garlic, and at the end of the recipe, if you want a stronger taste of garlic.

See you Out and About!
