Resident evicted from Constantine home

Village officials in Constantine took action against the owner of a house that was declared a public nuisance this week.

During their Monday meeting, council members agreed to order the tenant at a residence in the 400 block of White Pigeon Street to evacuate the premises due to cockroach infestation and other concerns relevant to the health of the occupant.

Village Manager Mark Honeysett said he toured the house with an official from the Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency and the two agreed the conditions made the residence uninhabitable.

Neighbors had complained to village officials about cockroaches making their way to their homes as a result of the infested residence.

Council members agreed that while they dislike evicting someone from their residence, the condition of the home’s interior was a public nuisance.

The resident will have a chance to correct the problems before being allowed to move back in.
