Out and About – Week of September 24th

September 25, 2012 by WLKM

We had ninety-degree temperatures in March, and it seems that we’re having an early fall with morning temperatures in the forties. One doesn’t dare to sleep in, because the chances are that you’ll miss one of the four seasons. I’ve said many times that fall is one of my favorite seasons because of the colors and milder temperatures. It’s too bad that winter follows fall, and that’s when the weather becomes unpredictable. Just my opinion. I’ve traveled around a bit, and Michigan is still the place I call home.

Trinity Episcopal Church, 321 North Main Street, Three Rivers, will host the First Annual Michigan Fall Conference at the church this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, September 28 through 30. The Friday and Saturday sessions will be at 6 PM, and the Sunday session will start at 1 PM. Apostle Valerie Rogers will present the program “A Word in Season, International Ministry”. The conference is open to the public.

The green 911 mailbox signs are still available from the St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department Explorer Post #478. They sell for $15.50 each, and all proceeds will be used by the Explorer Scout post for uniforms and training. These signs are a big help, should you ever need emergency response. For more information, please call the Sheriff’s Department at (269) 467-9045.

On Sunday, September 30, Glen Oaks Community College will hold their Ninth Annual Athletic Fall Kickoff Golf Scramble at St. Joe Valley Golf Club, located on M-86 between Centreville and Nottawa. A shotgun start at 11 AM will get the festivities off to a great start. The cost is only $60 per player, which includes golf, cart, dinner, prizes, and a few contests. Proceeds will benefit Glen Oaks Athletics. Need more information? Phone Glen Oaks Athletics at (269) 294-4215.

Please don’t forget about the Animal Rescue Fund’s walkathon. Saturday, October 6 is the date, and Meyer-Broadway Park is the place to bond with the animal member of your household. Sign-in begins at 10 AM, along with a ceremony to commemorate ARF’s 5000th spay/neuter assistance. For fun, make sure to not miss the “Doggy Dash” competition, plus many other games. Food and other goodies will also be provided. The registration fee is $10, and you may pick up a registration form from any ARF member, or at Beam Sound and Video, located on West Michigan Avenue in Three Rivers. As a bonus, prizes will be given to the top donation collectors.

With budget cuts happening every day, it is no surprise that many of the school programs are finding their way into the scrap pile. Because athletics are usually more popular than the fine arts, the music departments are often the ones affected the most. Not the case here in Three Rivers. The vocal and instrumental music departments in the Three Rivers school district are the ones bringing home the hardware from the competition. A perfect example is the Vocal Music Department. This Friday and Saturday, September 28 and 29, vocal music students will be seeking donations for “Tag Days”. They will be located at many of the merchants, including Hardings, Wal-Mart, and Walgreens. There are some stores that will have canisters available for your donation. Perhaps you’d like to give more than a couple of dollars. If so, please make a check payable to Three Rivers Choir Boosters, and send it to: Three Rivers High School, attention: Joel Moore, 700 Sixth Avenue, Three Rivers, Michigan 49093. The vocal music department is a 501-C-3, so your donation would be tax deductible. Please do your part to insure that the Fine Arts stay in our school system. It would be a shame to see them just fade away.

Christmas is still three months away, but I’m sure there are some merchants out there with their seasonal items already on the shelves. This means that I have plenty of time to do my shopping. I’ll probably wait for two months and twenty-nine days. Plenty of time.

Might be a good idea to dust off the snow blower and do a maintenance check. After all, this is Michigan. We could have six inches of snow by next weekend.

See you Out and About!
