Ed Chobot, 88

Edwin Joseph Chobot, age 88, of Mendon, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012 at Heartland Healthcare Center in Three Rivers, following a lengthy illness.

He was born July 19, 1924, in Chicago, a son of the late Anton and Anna (Broz) Chobot, and attended Chicago schools.

He was a World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Army at the 61st General Hospital in England with the Military Police. Ed worked the U.S. Law Printing Co. in Chicago as a linotype operator for 37 years before retiring to Mendon in 1987. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus Chicago Council #1005.

On Jan. 18, 1947, Ed married Vivian Teresa Sand at Presentation B.V.M. Church in Chicago. She survives, along with five children, Barbara (Robert) Sapp of Chicago, Edwin J. (Judith) Chobot Jr. of Sturgis, John (Brenda) Chobot of Mendon, Rich (Pamela) Chobot of Glen Ellyn, Ill., and Donna (Rodney) Cupp of Mendon; 14 grandchildren, Jason Sapp, Christina (Lincoln) Lounsbury, Edwin J. (Katie) Chobot II, Brian (Darcy) Chobot, Dawn (Shane) Griffith, Bridget (Rob) Griffioen, Kristine Chobot, Sarah Chobot, Chris Chobot, Chris (Alissa) Sheftic, Anthony (Katie) Sheftic, and Nicole Sheftic, Jon Brown, and David (Holly) Brown; 18 great-grandchildren, Ainslie Cooper, Reeve Lounsbury, Robbie, Zachary, and Brady Chobot, Evan and Abigale Griffioen, Kiersten and Shelby Chobot, Payton and Bailey Griffith, Stetson and Stratton Sheftic, Benjamin and Cameron Chobot, Landyn Michael Brown, and Rhylee Herr.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday and from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon, where the Rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Sunday.

The funeral Mass for Ed Chobot will be 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 17, 2012, at St. Edward Catholic Church in Mendon, with the Rev. Jim Vinh Le officiating. Burial will follow in St. Edward Catholic Cemetery, with military rites by Hice-Shutes American Legion Post #170. Memorials may be directed to St. Edward Catholic Church for memorial masses.
