Herb Maples, 84

Herbert “Herb” Halley Maples, 84, of Three Rivers, formerly of Portage, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Dec. 28, 2012. He was born on Oct. 26, 1928 in Long Island, N.Y., the son of the late Herbert J. and Florence (Pleus) Maples.
Herb graduated from Bloomfield High School, New Jersey with the Class of 1947. He then attended Upsala College and graduated with a Business Administration major and Psychology minor in 1950. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a Corporal at Fort Sam in Houston, Texas, during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Maples was employed in sales for Campbell’s, Whitmans Corp., and as a buyer and manager for Kroger’s Stores and Topps. He then became a Department Manager for Meijer Inc. where he eventually retired.
Mr. Maples was very active in all the communities in which he resided. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and served on various church boards. He was a member of the Pineview Estates Neighborhood Association, where he built his home some 20 years ago. Prior to his long illness, Herb enjoyed swimming at the HealthTRAC and golfing, as well as Coterie Dance Club with his wife.
Herb was predeceased by his parents.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory his wife, Marie A. (MacQuesten) Maples of Three Rivers; daughter, Dawn E. (Karl) Hansen of Marcellus; son, Glenn H. (Denice) Maples of Portage; brother, Bruce Maples of New Jersey; grandchild, Zaslow Maples; great-grandchildren, Chase and Chandler Maples.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until time of services at noon on Saturday, Jan. 5 at the First United Methodist Church, with Pastor Robert Nystrom officiating.
