United Way set record

The St. Joseph County United Way had a record-setting 2013 campaign, as its fundraising effort received more than $735,000.

During its annual victory celebration Thursday in Three Rivers, representatives from the Centreville-based agency announced the figure, which is the most in the local United Way’s 15-year history. It also marked an increase of more than 8 percent from the $680,000 collected in the 2012 campaign.

For the second consecutive year, Sturgis Hospital led the list of donors, with more than $51,000 committed to the agency. Rounding out the top five were American Axle, Burr Oak Tool of Sturgis, TH Plastics of Mendon and Morgan Olson of Sturgis.

Sturgis Hospital CEO Rob LaBarge and his wife, Patty, were named honorary chairs of the 2014 campaign, which is ongoing and concludes Jan. 31 next year.
