Hunting wolves issue for voters

April 1, 2013 by WLKM

The organization Keep Wolves Protected announced last week a petition to place wolf hunting on a 2014 referendum was submitted earlier this month.

If the proposed referendum is approved, it would delay a planned wolf-hunting season, approved by legislatures in December.

A 67-day drive to secure signatures and force the matter to be decided by Michigan’s voters netted more than 250,000 signatures, 90,000 more than needed by the Secretary of State.

Officials from Keep Wolves Protected said the state’s wolf population is around 700 and there is no value to hunting them other than for sport.

The issue of whether to allow hunting would appear before voters in November 2014.
