Burgoyne gets 30 days

White Pigeon Police Sgt. Bill Burgoyne was sentenced to serve 30 days in jail for charges related to a driving-while-impaired incident in April.

Burgoyne was sentenced Monday by Branch County Judge Brent Weigle, who ordered Burgoyne to serve the time in Branch County Jail. Despite a request for work release and community service, Burgoyne was sentenced to the 30 days, in part, because he was involved in an accident while under the influence, Weigle said.

In addition, Weigle said police officers, judges and prosecutors are held to a higher standard than members of the general public.

Burgoyne was the driver of a vehicle that went off the roadway in Sherwood Township. He and White Pigeon Chief Dutch Baker were returning from a conference in Lansing.
