Final river cleanup cancelled

The St. Joseph County Conservation District has canceled its final river cleanup of the season Saturday.

A 2.8-mile stretch of the Nottawa Creek in Leonidas Township was supposed to cap the agency’s seven cleanup events this summer. Jen Miller, Conservation District administrator, said the agency appreciates the support of numerous volunteers and businesses that supported the six cleanup efforts in 2013.

Collectively, 24.1 miles of rivers in the county were cleared of more than 3,400 pounds of debris in June, July and August during the third year of the five-year plan to clean all 150 miles of rivers in the county.

The agency’s River Cleanup Committee meets in December and will go over plans for the 2014 cleanup effort. The committee is looking for volunteers to join the committee and help plan next year’s effort.
