Kazoo – Racial profiling study

The Director of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety is facing some tough questions from city officials following the release of a report on racial profiling. Chief Jeff Hadley presented the results of year-long study to the City Commission Tuesday night, showing African American drivers are more than twice as likely as anyone else to be pulled over in the city. The study also found black drivers are less likely to get a ticket, but will be searched more often than other ethnic groups even though the research found they’re less likely to have contraband. City Commissioner Don Cooney called the report evidence of “institutional racism.” Hadley says his department will work quickly to address the findings of the study.  (MRN)
