Contemplating millage proposal

What was expected to be a major decision by members of the Mendon Community Schools Board of Education turned out to be an opportunity to further mull a proposed millage-increase request.

During its regularly scheduled monthly meeting Monday, the board learned from its attorney that the Nov. 6 date by which it would have to decide whether to authorize the proposed request was incorrect.

Superintendent Rob Kuhlman said in light of the news, board members decided to further contemplate the idea and make a decision at its next board meeting, Nov. 18.

At stake, potentially, is a 1-mill increase request that, if authorized and approved, would raise $9.3 million. About two thirds of that money would be used to upgrade and update the district’s two school buildings.

If the measure is approved, the work would be done in three phases, with construction bonds sold over periods of time instead of all at once.

In addition, the proposed 1-mill increase would allow for the purchase of seven new buses over an eight-year period, and a full technology upgrade.

Mendon current levies 7 mills, the second most in the county behind Sturgis Public Schools and its 8.37 mills.
