Police arrest man

A Leonidas man was arrested Wednesday following a police pursuit originating in Sturgis.

Randall Wood, 39, is being held on a parole absconder warrant along with charges of fleeing and eluding, and hit-and-run.

According to Sturgis police, the pursuit began around 10:30 a.m., when a Sturgis officer in an unmarked patrol vehicle saw Wood’s vehicle strike a light pole near Wall School on Lafayette Street.

The officer attempted to stop Wood, but he drove north on Lakeview Avenue and headed out of Sturgis on Lafayette, reaching speeds up to 70 mph as he passed Sturgis Middle School, police said.

Wood then attempted to elude police in Burr Oak Township. Wood managed to avoid stop-sticks at the intersection of Kelly and Big Hill roads.

As Wood headed back into Sturgis, his vehicle went into a snow bank on North Lakeview Avenue near Allendale Drive about 20 minutes after the chase began.

He was arrested without incident.
