Inaugural Adoption Fund color run fundraiser a success

Nearly 100 people took part in Saturday’s inaugural St. Joseph County United Way Adoption Fund color run, a 5K event that drew runners, joggers and walkers to the cross country course at Colon High School.

Kelly Hostetler, director of the St. Joseph County United Way, said considering the fundraiser was in its first year, turnout was better than expected. The run will become an annual event, taking place the last Saturday of September.

Carl and Annette Thornton, owners of the Colon Five Star Pizza, approached Hostetler last year about establishing the Adoption Find to benefit families in the county pursuing adoption.

Thornton said his parents adopted a Korean girl when she was less than a year old in 1972, and the experience was the impetus for the creation of the Adoption Fund.

A set of twins will soon be the adopted children of a St. Joseph County couple, who are the first to benefit from the Adoption Fund.
