Edna Shimp, 86

Shimp obitEdna L. Shimp, age 86, of Sturgis, and a former longtime Centreville resident, passed away Sunday afternoon, Dec. 7, 2014, at her home.

She was born Sept. 8, 1928, in Battle Creek, a daughter of the late Leon and Gladys (Miller) Hoover.

Edna resided in the Centreville and Sturgis area most of her life and enjoyed wintering in Arizona for 26 years. On Dec. 3, 1955, she married George Shimp in Sturgis.

Edna was a self-employed interior decorator and a member of the Garden Club in Arizona and Red Hat Society. She enjoyed crafts, gardening and traveling and truly loved entertaining and hosting parties in the family home.

She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, George; two sons, Michael (Pricilla) Shimp of Sturgis and Chuck (Lisa) Shimp of Bronson; a daughter, Carol Zimmerman of Sturgis; six grandchildren, Michael Shawn, Ben, Josh, Nick, Samantha and Tana; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Audrey Hemminga; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Connie Hochstetler; a granddaughter, Valerie Fredricks; a sister, Barbara Moyer; and two brothers, Walter Miller and Robert Hoover.

In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the Rosenberg Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis. A memorial service celebrating the life of Edna L. Shimp will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. The Rev. James Erwin of Bethel Gilead Community Church of Bronson will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis.
