Two local bank branches to close

The Centreville location of FirstMerit Bank is one of four Michigan branches the Ohio-based financial institution plans to close this spring.
Meanwhile, Constantine will also be losing a bank this spring. Officials from Old National Bank plan to consolidate the South Washington Street branch with an Indiana-based location.
Rob Townsend, media relations officer with FirstMerit, said the Centreville branch is included in a total of 16 FirstMerit facilities in the Midwest to close April 30. St. Joseph County branches in Sturgis, Colon and White Pigeon will remain open.
Townsend said customers have increasingly taken advantage of mobile and online banking, lessening the need for traditional brick-and-mortar sites.
A similar customer pattern has prompted Old National Bank to close its Constantine branch and consolidate its operations with the company’s Elkhart facility.
Jamie Guise, community engagement executive for Old National, said Constantine is one of 19 locations within a four-state area subject to a consolidation or closing.
A confirmed date for the branch’s closing has not been set, but Guise said it will be in mid-May.
Constantine is Old National’s only location in St. Joseph County.
