Eddiess Hughes, 96

Eddiess May Hughes, age 96, of Leonidas, died Tuesday, April 7, 2015 at Bronson Methodist Hospital following a one week illness. She was born near Parma, Michigan on Sep. 24, 1918 the daughter of Scott Lee and Dellele May (Hawks) Thomas. She attended country school near Parma and was a 1936 graduate of Sturgis High School. She worked briefly at the Kalamazoo State Hospital before her marriage to Samuel B. Hughes on Dec. 30, 1941. Together they operated a farm near Leonidas until Sam’s death in 1970. Eddiess continued to operate the farm for many years and was a foster parent for over forty years, providing a home to many young people. She was a member of the Leonidas Grange, was an avid reader, and enjoyed jig saw and crossword puzzles.

Eddiess is survived by four children, Helen Hughes of Grand Ledge, Julia Hughes of Leonidas, Edward (Cathy) Hughes of Marcellus, and Pamela London of Kalamazoo; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sam; two children, Thomas and Joyce Hughes; and a brother, Leonard Thomas.

The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 am Saturday April 11, 2015 at the Eickhoff Farrand Halverson Chapel, 305 Rock River Avenue in Three Rivers. Funeral services will begin at 11 am at the funeral home with Pastors Sam and Becky Maddox of the Light and Life Wesleyan Church officiating. Burial will be in Leonidas Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to either the Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Council, or to the Animal Rescue Fund. Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.efhchapel.com
