Recycling event successful

Collection figures from Saturday’s drop-off of household hazardous waste and electronics were down compared to the spring 2014 event.
Nonetheless, organizers are calling it a success.
Sponsored by the St. Joseph County Solid Waste Management Planning Committee, the four-hour collection yielded about 8,500 pounds of hazardous waste, 20,000 pounds of electronics, 622 tires, 1,200 cans of paint, half a semi load of paper and paperboard, and 26 appliances.
For the sake of comparison, the April 2014 event drew 14,000 pounds of household hazardous waste, 40,000 pounds of electronics, 715 tires and 2,500 cans of paint.
Solid waste committee secretary Pat Kulikowski said the 26 appliances collected Saturday included 13 dehumidifiers and eight air conditioners.
The committee’s second of the two collections this year will take place in October.
