Board of Commissioners approved Nottawa County Park upgrades

The first step toward a major upgrade at Nottawa County Park was taken Tuesday.
Members of the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners approved a proposal for a sewage-disposal-system design. The measure means the park is potentially on its way to having sewer service and running water.
Currently, restroom amenities feature only pit toilets.
Jaymes MacDonald, director of the county’s parks and recreation department, said he has met with officials from the engineering firm Fleis and Vandenbrink regarding the project. He said representative Jeff Wingard indicated the cost for design only would be $3,000.
In his memo to commissioners, MacDonald stated that the lack of modern facilities is a downfall of Nottawa Park. Constructing modern bathrooms aid in changing the run-down perception the park carries, he added.
Designing a septic system is the first step in making this bathroom project a reality, MacDonald continued.
The $3,000 toward the study will come from money MacDonald managed to save from a project upgrade at Hoshel Road Canoe Park.
