Out and About – Week of May 4th

If I stopped spending money at the grocery store next week, they would never even notice I was gone. If you and I were to take a small fraction of our grocery money and spend it at the Farmers’ Market, we would help a local farmer pay the rent. We might even help save his farm. Please watch this paper for the opening date of our local Farmers’ Market here in Three Rivers. Let’s do what we can to keep our money here in St. Joe County.
If you haven’t already heard, the Glenn Miller Orchestra is returning to the Riviera Theater. Their concert is scheduled for Friday, June 5, at 7 PM. If you enjoy sitting in your seat while listening to some great “Big-Band” sounds and tapping your feet along with the beat of the music, then you won’t want to miss this exciting evening. Tickets and more information are available at the Riviera box office.
I’ve been writing lately about our senses. So far, I’ve mentioned the sense of sight and the sense of smell. Hearing is another sense that I’m not ready to be without. Because of working around jet engines for about fifteen years, I have suffered some of that sense. High-pitched sounds are the most difficult. For instance, I can’t hear a watch alarm. I wear hearing aids, although I wish I didn’t need to.
I’d put money on the fact that in about thirty or forty years from now, the young people of today will be wearing hearing aids. Someone will discover that the little pods that you wear in your ears, combined with the high volume setting, causes severe hearing loss. I’m not about to lecture anyone about this, because what do I know? I grew up listening to Rock ‘n’ Roll.
Hearing and eye protection are required out at the St. Joe County Conservation Club for all members who enjoy the sport of shooting. This does not apply to those who shoot with a bow and arrow.
I’ve been told that we men have selective hearing. I’m afraid I don’t know anything about that. Perhaps someone is referring to the fact that I don’t have a problem hearing my wife when she calls me to the dinner table, but my hearing loss kicks in whenever she asks me to do a chore around the house.
I’m interested in knowing whether there is a local business that installs trailer hitches on cars and trucks. I’ve needed this type of work done lately and ended up going to Elkhart, Indiana. I’ve done business with Dan’s Hitch in the past, so I returned once again to have a hitch installed on a new car. Ryan handled our needs very professionally. He was knowledgeable about their product and service and, in talking with him, I could tell that he really loves his job. I’d like to see more businesses operate with this much interest and enthusiasm.
Here’s another thing I found on the internet. I’d be interested in hearing from someone who has tried this and will testify that it actually works. I’m not interested in picking up a splinter to test the remedy.
When plagued with a splinter in the finger or foot, apply a paste made up of baking soda and water. Wait several minutes and the splinter should pop out of the skin. If this actually does work, drop me a line and let me know. I’ll share the discovery with the other readers.
I’d like to end the column this week with a couple of “Did you Knows?”
The sound made by Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe is so loud that it can be heard 40 miles away.
A Rubik’s Cube has 43,252,003,274,489, 856,000 possible configurations.
See you Out and About!
