Out and About – Week of June 22

This year’s Three Rivers Water Festival is now in the books, so I won’t mention this again until next year. Despite the weather, it was fun.

Next weekend is Relay for Life, another opportunity for the community to come together and do something good for humanity. Relay for Life starts at 10 A.M. next Saturday, June 27 at Armstrong Field in Three Rivers and runs for 24 hours until 10 A.M. Sunday. The opening ceremony is the first of two events that highlight this very worthwhile event. At 10 A.M. Saturday, a multitude of doves will be released and Cancer survivors will run a special lap around the oval track.  This promises to be a real test to insure that your tear ducts are still functioning. At 10 P.M. Saturday, the luminary ceremony will take place.

As a community member, I feel it is very important to spend some time at Armstrong Field during these 24 hours. Community attendance and support are just two things that will help make the Relay for Life a success. Walk a few laps with friends or family, spend some time visiting with the sponsors, and then reach into your wallet or purse and give generously. It’s amazing just how good you’ll feel and how much good will come of it.

Sunday was the first day of summer, which means that the days are now getting shorter. I don’t care much for that, but there are still many opportunities and many reasons to get Out and About. The Fourth of July is on a weekend this year, so make sure to visit surrounding communities and take in the fireworks. HarmonyFest will be here soon and that’s the next big event for the Three Rivers community.

Hardly a weekend goes by without at least several garage or yard sales happening. Light and Life Wesleyan Church, 15765 Hoffman Road, Three Rivers will have theirs from 9 until 4 this Saturday, June 27. The church is across the street from the UAW Hall, so it won’t be hard to find. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the building fund.

The Carnegie Center for the Arts is pleased to announce a “Summer Full of Art”. The Carnegie will conduct classes for three year olds to teens in two separate sessions. Session I runs from July 13-23 and Session II, July 27-August 6. This makes it easier to schedule the family getaway for the summer. Contact the Carnegie in order to receive the 2009 Summer Full of Art brochure. The Carnegie Center is located in Three Rivers at 107 North Main. Their hours are Tuesday – Friday from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. and from 10 A.M. – 3P.M. on Saturday. You may also phone them at (269)273-8882 or visit their website at www.trcarnegie.com.

The Kalamazoo Concert Band pays a visit to Three Rivers next Saturday, June 27, for a concert in the park. The park is actually the parking lot on the west side of the railroad tracks behind the Riviera Theatre. The concert begins at 4 P.M. and yes, it is FREE. Conducting the Kalamazoo Concert Band will be our own Brian Shetterly. Some of the musical selections include music from The Incredibles, selections from Grease, “Loch Lomond”, and “America, the Beautiful”. This concert is made possible through Hohner Funeral Home and many of the community-minded individuals, merchants, and corporations in the Three Rivers area. For more information on the Kalamazoo Concert Band, visit their website at www.kalamazooconcertband.org.

Enjoy the summer, and I’ll see you Out and About!
