K-wings slide by Icehawks 4-2

December 18, 2008 by Matt Loker

After dropping their last two road games, the Kalamazoo Wings were looking to turn the tide on Tuesday night as they battled the Port Huron Icehawks.

With the Icehawks leading by a score of 1-0 after the first period following a goal by Jason Selleke, the K-wings bounced back in the second stanza.

With the Icehawks on the man advantage, Anthony Battaglia was able to snare the puck away to score on a breakaway to tie the game at one goal apiece.

Several minutes later Battaglia again answered the call for the K-wings as he scored his second goal of the night. Taking a pass from Justin Cross, Battaglia fired the puck past goalie Larry Sterling to give the K-wings a 2-1 lead.

The K-wings took a 3-1 lead nearly midway through the third period. Mark Nebus, out-hustling two Icehawks to the puck, found Tommy Lange who in turn scored his tenth goal of the season.

The Icehawks Tab Lardner cut the K-wings lead to one, but it was not enough as Glenn Detulleo scored with just under twenty seconds left in the game to seal the K-wings victory. The goal by Detulleo was his eighth of the season.

Jason Tapp was in goal for the K-wings, stopping 29 out of the 31 shots he faced.

With the victory, the K-wings improve to 13-9-0-0 on the season and move into third place, just one point ahead of the idle Muskegon Lumberjacks and two points behind the first place Icehawks.

The K-wings return to Wings Stadium this Friday night as they take on the Flint Generals. On Saturday, the Bloomington Prairie Thunder will be in town for the 9th annual Teddy Bear Toss night. Fans are encouraged to bring their new or gently used stuffed toys to the game. When the K-wings score their first goal, fans are encouraged to throw their animals on to the ice. The toys will be collected and donated to the Salivation Army. A portion of the toys will be delivered to the Children’s Hospital at Bronson Hospital by K-wing players, Slappy the mascot and Santa Claus on Monday.

Both games begin at 7:30 PM. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Wings Stadium Ticket Office at (269)-345-5101. Can’t make the game in person? You can listen to the K-wings all season long on the Classic Hits Station WLKM FM 95.9 with the pre-game show beginning at 7:15 PM.

K-wings News and Notes:

Generally speaking: Forward Lucas Drake may wish that the K-wings played the Flint Generals more often. Out of the 12 goals that Drake has scored this season, 7 of them have come at the expense of the Generals.

So long: The K-wings waived forward Bill Zalba on Tuesday afternoon.

Reaching new heights: With his goal in last Saturday nights contest against the Bloomington Prairie Thunder, Tyler Willis notched his 400th career point.
