Out and About for November 11th, 2008

November 11, 2008 by Matt Loker

From now until the end of the year, we will be either celebrating a holiday or preparing for one. It’s a time for parties and family gatherings, a time for shopping for gifts and for presenting those gifts that you’ve shopped long and hard for. Homemade gifts are less expensive, but they do require some imagination. Ellen Brunner is a person you might want to meet and work with. Ellen is the instructor of a class about innovative art projects using clay. Classes will take place at 10 A.M. on Friday, November 14 and 21 at the Three Rivers Senior Center, 103 S. Douglas, in Three Rivers. The unique thing is that there is no cost to participate. If interested, phone the Senior Center at 279-8083. They’ll register you and provide answers to any questions you might have.

While on the subject of arts and crafts, Pat Shafer is still instructing a class entitled, “Art For Dummies”. Meeting every Thursday from 1 to 3 P.M. at the Three Rivers Senior Center, the class is made up of fun activities – like those in grade school, but geared more toward adult interests. The cost is $25 for 6 weeks of classes. The only supplies you’ll need are scissors and a glue stick. Supplies are shared. Again, call the Senior Center at 279-8083 for registration.

One more thing, while I’m addressing our senior citizens. The Constantine Senior Center is now open at the Messiah Lutheran Church, 185 W. 5th Street. The center used to be located at the White Pigeon Library. The hours for the new center are 10 A.M. to 1 P.M. Commission on Aging (COA) bus and restaurant tickets are available for purchase, and you may partake of a delicious lunch by ordering 24 hours in advance. To order lunch, phone 1-800-641-9899 or 279-8083.

This month we celebrate Thanksgiving, a time for getting together with family and celebrating our many blessings. It’s also a time for putting aside that strict diet that you always adhere to and let your belt out one small notch. I ask that you remember those who will be celebrating this holiday alone. I can’t think of one valid reason that someone should be alone during any special holiday. Unfortunately, there are some who are by themselves and, for those individuals, I have a great solution. The Commission on Aging (COA) is arranging for a luncheon and show trip to Marshall, Michigan, and Cornwell’s Turkeyville U.S.A. It all happens Monday, November 24. You’ll leave Three Rivers at 9:30 A.M. and return by 5:30 in the afternoon. You’ll partake of a turkey and trimmings buffet lunch and then be treated to a special Christmas show. The cost for this day of memories is $51, which includes luncheon, show, tax, tip and transportation. This must be paid in advance and is non-refundable. You must call the COA to make your reservations BEFORE November 18. Phone 1-800-641-9899 or 279-8083.

The Three Rivers Wildcats lost to South Haven last Friday evening. It was mentioned that Friday night’s weather was true football weather. Windy and cold. South Haven came hungry for a victory and left victorious. The Wildcats had a very exciting season and should be congratulated for going into the post-season. We’ve lost some good seniors, but I feel we have the core for a great football season next year. Basketball starts in a couple of weeks. GO CATS!!

Have a fun week and I’ll see you Out and About!
